Good drinks. Amazing tacos. Weekly Tuesday specials. All in Center City. A win win win. Finally: a decently affordable taco spot in the area. Hi-Lo is the one.
Let's set aside for a few minutes how good the food is...and it's REALLY good...and talk about the staff. When you find a place where the staff seem to truly like their jobs...and each other...and you...you're likely to have a great experience! The manager, who's every bit a part of making this place as wonderful as the food is...told me recently that she has the same staff now...that was there when Hi-Lo opened 1 year ago! Think about that for a minute. NO turnover in staff for a year! That's unheard of in the restaurant industry, and there's a reason why. Hi-Lo taco is doing things right! Top to bottom...front to back...inside and out! Now on to the food. It's good...really good! It's unfortunate that the chef/owner can't be out front to take in the looks and sounds of joy that come with every bite... but he's back in the kitchen doing what he does best. Creating and preparing some of the best tacos (and more) that you can experience...short of being blessed by having a Latina grandmother. Don't be fooled by the simplicity of his creations. They're a thoughtful combinations of the finest and freshest ingredients available. Pork is smoked in house and is as moist and tender as award winning bbq. The salsa is a deep red bordering on brown color... because individual ingredients are fire roasted in house creating a memorable medley and depth of flavor. And the tortilla chips...oh, those chips!!! I like a thick chip and my girlfriend likes thin chips. We both agree that Hi-Lo tortilla chips...are "perfect chips"! Order them with the trinity of salsa, guacamole, and queso. (You can thank me later) They're made in small batches and will arrive at your table wam, and crispy, and salted to perfection...each time they offer to bring you more. (And they will) The drinks are as creative and fresh tasting as the food is. Whether it's a "Troparita" or a "Paloma Pop Ranch Water"... you'll definitely be wanting a second! Look...I could go on and on about the smoked pork and pineapple taco (my favorite), or the crispy shrimp taco, or even the "smashburger" taco... (did he just say "smashburger taco"? ...I could describe the drink menu in greater detail or gush over the crispy smoked wings...but let's talk about what happening right now. You've already decided that you want to try Hi-Lo Taco...I'm talking way too much... and your mouth is beginning to water! Great choice! You're as smart as you look... but we knew that! Enjoy
Delicious fresh food. Lots of menu options. Egg/breakfast options available all day. Dietary restriction friendly. Great service. Relaxed setting. Dine-in, Take out or 3rd party delivery.
Went on a Wednesday night with friends to just catch up. Soon as we walked in we were greeted & seated. Our waiter was super friendly and attentive. We had a friend with a dairy allergy and he made sure her order was dairy free all the way down to the butter! Food and drinks came out really quick and everything was super good. We all got the tropiarita which was amazing. I had the smash burger taco and the spicy Cajun shrimp taco. Both were amazing and super filling! 3 of us went, we all got a drink each, chips & salsa, and 2 tacos each and the check was under $100! Definitely priced well. Also music was a great mix of popular hits & Spanish music. Vibe was perfect for a girls night catching up. Will definitely return when I'm back to Philly
Hi-Lo isn't just a happy hour...it's the happiest hour in the city! My buddy Zack swooped in like my knight in shining armor, rescuing this damsel in distress from work and whisking me off to his hidden paradise. $6 margaritas? Count me in! These babies do more than quench your thirst...they'll have you happily slurring, 'I love this place!' We strutted through the doors like VIPs (Zack swears they know him), and let me tell you, Hi-Lo truly puts the hi in quality and the lo in price. Saturday happy hours? Now that's a fairytale ending! Catch me here forever, thanks, Hi-Lo! ** Our waitress Espy was amazing ( there's a bar as well) and the owner always has a strong presence a very good sign of a great place to be at
While visiting a friend in Center City, we came to Hi-Lo taco for a quick afternoon bite on a Saturday, around 4:00 or so. We didn't look into the place, but knew that it was new, so we decided to try it out. Pleasantly surprised to find out that they do Happy Hour specials, even on the weekend! The variety of drinks and food was pretty great, despite being a little bit pricey. We all got tacos and my one friend got a specialty soda. Food was great quality, hot, and came out very quickly. I got the chicken bacon ranch taco, pineapple pulled pork taco (H.H. special), and chorizo + beans breakfast taco. Very happy with all 3 of them. The restaurant was very clean and the staff was very attentive. Would definitely recommend to somebody looking for tasty and fast tacos in Philly!
As a City worker, I'm always looking for deals I can snag using my City ID. This week, for our return back to the office full time, Hi-Lo was kind enough to offer a 10% discount. Hi-Lo is located right on the corner of Walnut Street, next to Scoop Deville. Since I was using my ID, I walked in and placed my to-go order with the host. My food was ready in about 10 minutes. I ordered two tacos and a side of jalapeño-lime slaw. Not only did everything look amazing, but the flavor was out of this world! Jalapeño lime slaw was slightly spicy, but nothing I couldn't handle. It had crunchy fried onions on top and was a refreshing side to enjoy with my tacos. The mushroom asada taco was unreal! The smoky flavor was on point. I also enjoyed the queso fresco and rice mixture in the cauliflower tinga taco. The tortillas were soft and buttery. Both tacos exceeded my expectations. I'm glad I got to experience Hi-Lo! I'll be back for Happy Hour soon, and would also be interested in trying a bowl from their menu.
FOOD We swung by around 4 pm and ordered a mix between the happy hour and regular menus. I had the guajillo BBQ chicken and chicken fajita tacos. The BBQ taco was the perfect mix of sweet and savory and one I'd definitely get again if returning. The chicken fajita wasn't my favorite-- a little mellower on the flavor side and heavier than the former. Finally, the jumbo wings were equally sweet and savory as its taco counterpart. The ranch complemented the wings perfectly. DRINKS We ordered the margarita ($5 during happy hour), and it packed a punch! Definitely recommend getting one when stopping by. SERVICE The staff are kind and friendly. AMBIANCE The interior is very neat and modern. With the front of the store relatively small, I was surprised to see how expansive the establishment actually was when we stepped in. The high ceilings add to the spaciousness of the place as well. PARKING Paid street parking is available at a limited capacity. Parking garages are also located nearby.
Interesting vibe for a taco place. The menu also quite interesting, offering up some twists on the usual flare for tacos. The pork taco was standard, what you would expect. The highlight, however, are the fish options. The cod was great, wonderful texture and the sauce on top was thoroughly enjoyed. The mushroom asada taco is not something we typically would've ordered but greatly enjoyed. Appreciate when tacos are not double-wrapped, which these were not. I'm not sure if this is an everyday offering as it isn't on the drink menu but we were offered a pitcher of margaritas for $22, which was a pretty good price for the amount we got. Would get take-out or come back to try some more of the offerings.
